Georgia State University Symphonic Wind Ensemble

Under the direction of Robert J. Ambrose, the Georgia State University Symphonic Wind Ensemble has established itself as one of the finest wind bands in the Southeast. Their recent performances have been met with critical acclaim throughout the region for their musical artistry and innovative programming. The Symphonic Wind Ensemble is comprised of the finest woodwind, brass and percussion players in the School of Music selected each semester by audition. The ensemble’s repertoire is drawn from significant literature written for wind ensemble, symphonic band and chamber winds.

Award winning composers seek out the Symphonic Wind Ensemble to perform and record their compositions. The ensemble has hosted a long list of composers on campus for residencies and concerts including Frank Ticheli, John Mackey, Steven Bryant, Leslie Bassett, John Harbison, Michael Colgrass, Joel Puckett, Jonathan Newman and Jack Stamp.  The ensemble’s debut CD American Manuscripts was released on the Albany Records label in 2009 and featured several world premiere recordings.  The Symphonic Wind Ensemble also contributed tracks to the resource recordings for Volume 7 of the Teaching Music Through Performance in Band and to the recently released double CD Composer’s Collection: Michael Colgrass.
